Artist Spotlight: Nailah Copeland

Recently, I was granted the opportunity to interview Nailah Copeland of Asha's Hair Salon located in Roswell, GA. This multifaceted stylist takes natural hair to the next level. Nailah gives us insightful beauty tips while imparting wisdom for future stylist from a professional's perspective. Enjoy!

How would you describe yourself as a stylist, and what do you specialize in?  I would describe myself as a cosmetologist, educator, entrepreneur and, artist.  I specialize in healthy hair.  As a stylist I perform a wide variety of services from cuts, color, extensions, wigs, braids, and up-dos.  I also offer brow, eyelash and make-up services.

What are your tips for color treated clients? Color treated clients should deep condition their hair once a week whether they are wearing permanent or semi-permanent color.

What are your go to products both at home and in the salon?  My favorite product line is Mizani and I absolutely love the night-time treatment.  It works well for the hair and scalp.

What made you decide to become a stylist, and what is your favorite part of what you do?  I have always had an interest in doing hair since I was a little girl. I have admired the versatility that the beauty industry offers. I love being able to travel, work on set or, see my regular clients in the salon.

Healthy hair is the root of beautiful hair. How do you encourage your clients to take care of their hair at home?  I advocate healthy hair to my clients so that they are able to manage their hair better for themselves.  A simple satin pillow case makes a big difference.  Sometimes it takes a while for a client to get into the routine of maintaining their hair but, the end result is always worth it.

What words of advice have you received as a professional that you would pass along to any new stylist?  I have always been encouraged to value my money as I make it.  I would pass the same advice on to new comers to the industry. Get a CPA and prepare for longevity.  Whether you decide to work commission, freelance or, as a business owner make sure you are working your business full circle.

What's hiding in your makeup brushes?

It’s easy to just use your makeup brushes each morning without giving much care to what’s left behind and  waiting to grace your face the next day. Makeup brushes harbor all sorts of bacteria and even mold. After you tuck your unwashed tools away it is safe to say that mold is the last thing on your mind while you continue with day. However, when you see a new blemish or two peeking out at you, your dirty brushes could be to blame. Give your brushes a little more attention and wash your dry/powder brushes weekly and your concealer brushes at least every three days. Here are a few more tips on how to take care of your makeup brushes:

  • Use a gentle face cleanser or even baby wash and water to clean your brushes
  • Allow the brushes to air dry
  • Rinse and squeeze out excess water from the base to the tip of the bristles
  • Let your brushes air dry on a flat surface
  • Use rubbing alcohol to disinfect your brush handles
  • Oil based cleansers work great to remove heavy makeup that has had time to build up

Why Sleep Is Essential To Your Beauty

Last night while you were sleeping your skin was still on the clock. Did you know that your skin not only changes from your environment and weather, but also from day to night? It’s true. Physiology of the skin of the skin changes from day to night. It’s called circadian rhythms. Your skin produces less oil, is warmer, loses more water, & repairs itself more at night than during daylight. While you’re getting your beauty rest your skin gets a break, well sort of. Night time is  your skins time to go into recovery mode and repair the trauma that it has  undergone throughout the day.

How do we take advantage of this natural process? From dry skin, fine lines, wrinkles, and acne prone skin this is the perfect time to add what your skin is lacking during the day. Nourishment is the primary force to restoration and choosing the right tool is the first step. Serums (because they are concentrated), essential oils (such as rosehip), moisturizing creams work well (depending on your skin care needs) to repair and restore because your skin is open to receive more nourishment. So, look at night time as a time of renewal not just for your body, but for your skin as well!

Throw Back Beauty: Jayne Kennedy

Jayne made her initial entrance into the spotlight when she won Miss Ohio in 1970. Her win granted her the opportunity to be a semifinalist for the Miss USA pageant, which was a feat its own during this time. Mrs. Kennedy went from beauty queen to sports announcer becoming one of the first female sports announcers for The NFL Today in 1978.

I love Jayne’s sleek and gorgeous look in this photo. The splash of berry on her lips compliments her appearance perfectly. If you’d like a color similar to Jayne’s try Vivid Emotion @ myellanicole.com
